Sounding Shell II

steel, mesh, chain, carved alabaster, light | dimensions variable | 2026

Subterrania is a soundscape composed of multiple field recordings taken between 2024 and 2026, including the 'heartbeats' of trees in Brooklyn's Prospect Park, the crackling and swooshing of their vascular systems sucking water from the ground into their trunks and branches after rainstorms, my heart beat, the church bells from a Venetian rooftop, and the Friday evening call to prayer from Chefchouan's Spanish Mosque. Additional audio was sampled from Bahram Bezaie's 1986 film Bashu, the Little Stranger and from Philippe Jaroussky and The Ensemble Artaserse's performance of The Plaint from Henry Purcell's 1692 The Fairy Queen. A big thank you to countertenor Philippe Jaroussky and The Ensemble Artaserse for permitting the inclusion of this performance in the project.
